Derek Johns - left 1952
Had played Rugby, Cricket and Athletics for the school. Madly in love with Margaret Butler who eventually preferred someone else to my everlasting regret.

First of all I took a Short Service commission as a Flying Officer for 3 years in the RAF, serving most of the time in Western Germany and ending up as Officer Commanding a GEE station in the foothills of the Harz mountains. This was also a winter sports resort for the troops and so I got a lot of skiing in in my spare time.

Chemistry was my main interest and after National Service this is what I wanted to do. After my RAF service, I obtained a post as a research chemist in a steel company. I was based in Whitchurch, just outside Aylesbury, doing research into metallic corrosion.

This led on after seven years to a change to the cement industry, when I took up a post as Technical Manager at the Pitstone Cement Works of Tunnel Cement. After seven years here, I was made redundant and made a complete career change and went into Further Education as a management trainer, eventually specialising in computers. I became an Associate Lecturer in Computing with the Open University.

Now I'm retired and spend my time taking an interest in my 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren.

What's next for you?
Not a lot, except to help my extended family in any way I can and also to continue my regular trips to Egypt to extend my Egyptological experience.

What advice would you give to a Cedars student getting ready for the future?
Follow your desires as hard as you can.
