Tim Alberry - left 1979
What was happening for you as you left Cedars? What year?
I had 10 'O' Levels, and 2 A levels, and not the foggiest clue what I wanted to do. I'd done a paper-round, worked in a supermarket and a plastic bottle factory.

What was your plan then?
To go to university because my parents thought it was a good idea, which suited me because I knew I didn't want to start work yet (& I didn't want to work in a plastic bottle factory). I wanted to keep learning and have fun.

What happened next?
I ended up going to Bradford University to read Environmental Science - had a great time getting a degree and having lots of fun growing up, developing my skills.

What was your first real job?
Even after having got my degree, I still didn't really know what I wanted to do, so I moved to London and looked for a job. My first was as a clerk at British Gas in Marble Arch. This was when personal computers (PCs) first arrived. I sussed out how to make them work and started to be the IT guru in the office. I stayed there for 2 years.

What did that lead to?
Eventually I left British Gas to work for a computer company full-time, learning all the time about computers and networks, and eventually the internet. I changed companies 4 times, managed teams of people, climbed the promotional ladders to eventually become the Managing Director of a small internet security company.

What are you doing now?
I realised that earning as much money as possible wasn't very rewarding, so I decided I wanted to do something that helped people more. I trained to be a hypnotherapist when I was 38, and started working from home in 2000 running a hypnotherapy practice and and small internet security company - which I am still doing now: www.giss-uk.com & www.lifeworks.uk.com.

What would you say to a Cedars student getting ready for the future?
If you don't know what you want to do, keep looking, and trust your instincts. If something attracts you in a certain direction, go for it. The harder you work, the better the rewards. Find ways to do the things you know you are good at. When you are starting out always get to work earlier than everyone else, prove to people you want to find better and better ways of doing things. Always like everyone you meet, whatever they are like, because you could have been born into their life, and ended up just like them. Smile a lot.
